Postdoctoral position in experimental low temperature physics: Quantum oscillations in correlated electron systems

Research and Location

The independent research group “Physics of Unconventional Metals and Superconductors” is situated at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids in Dresden, Germany (www.cpfs.mpg.de).

Our group is interested in novel states of matter appearing in materials with strong electronic correlations. Examples of such exotic electronic behavior are unconventional superconductivity or quantum criticality. We strive for further understanding of these states by studying their properties at very low temperature and as a function of magnetic field and pressure.

Job description

The postdoctoral candidate will work on the experimental detection of quantum oscillations in quantum matter. This type of measurement often gives surprising information on the quasiparticle spectroscopy that cannot be easily predicted by theory because of the strong electron correlation. It requires very sensitive electric transport and magnetic measurements in a dilution fridge. Depending on the candidate’s interest, thermal transport measurements at very low temperature and in high magnetic fields can also be carried out in existing cryostats at the institute. Both methods are powerful probes for (non-) Fermi liquid behavior. We also use pressure as a tuning parameter of the ground state.

Requirements
Interested candidates should meet the following requirements

  • PhD in Physics
  • Profound experience with experimental solid state physics, especially at millikelvin temperatures, in high magnetic fields and with the use of low noise electronics
  • Strong knowledge of correlated electron physics
  • Experience with high pressure techniques is an asset
  • Very strong communication skills including fluency in written and spoken English

Conditions of employment

The full-time position will be under supervision of Dr. Elena Hassinger. It is available initially for two years, with the possibility for extension.

The Max-Planck Society is committed to increasing the number of individuals with disabilities in its workforce and therefore encourages applications from such qualified individuals. Furthermore, the Max Planck Society seeks to increase the number of women in those areas where they are underrepresented and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply.
