    International Prize for Clifford Hicks

    Warmest congratulations to Dr. Clifford Hicks of the Physics of Quantum Materials department, who has been awarded the 2017 Young Scientist Prize in Low Temperature Physics by the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics.  This important international prize, awarded every three years, will be presented in August at the 28th International Conference on Low Temperature Physics (LT-28) in Gothenburg, Sweden.

    Clifford’s prize citation reads ‘For his pioneering development of low temperature measurement techniques, notably concerning the application of uniaxial stress, and his experiments on unconventional superconductivity.’  His uniaxial pressure research was begun during his time as a post-doc at the University of St Andrews, and has continued apace since he moved to the MPI CPfS in 2013 and was promoted to a group leader position in 2014.  As well as performing fundamental research and development at the Institute, Clifford co-founded Razorbill Instruments, who are successfully commercializing uniaxial pressure apparatus based on his designs.

    The LT conference series is one of the longest-running conferences in our field, having run continuously since 1946, and a notable previous recipient of the Young Scientist Prize was Kostya Novoselov in 2008.  It is great to see Clifford’s ground-breaking research recognized in this way, and we wish him and his collaborators continued success as they continue to push the limits in a series of improved and refined designs.
