International School of Aperiodic Crystals (ISAC-6)

September 12, 2025

Aperiodic crystals - structures without conventional periodicity - play a vital role in advancing our understanding of materials science, with implications for physical properties like conductivity, magnetism, and optical behavior.

MPI CPfS hosted the 6th International School on Aperiodic Crystals (ISAC-6) from September 1 to 5, 2025. This event, a satellite meeting of the 35th European Crystallographic Meeting in Lviv and Poznań, brought together leading experts, early-career researchers, and postgraduate students in the field of crystallography to explore the frontiers of aperiodic structures and their applications.

Many participants contributed a poster, among which three were awarded a prize:

- Shun Tokuda for (MPI FKF) “Designing aperiodicity in metal-organic frameworks”
- Sitaram Ramakrishnan (Institut Néel CNRS) for “Delving into uncharted territories in the phase diagram of ferroelectric KNbO3”
- Rachel Nixon (MPI CPfS and University of St. Andrews) for “Investigation of complex non-centrosymmetric Hg-based compounds”

By bringing together theory, experimental practice, and young scientists, ISAC-6 supported education, innovation, and the development of new quantum materials. The gathering not only fueled academic progress, but also laid groundwork for potential technological breakthroughs.
