Good news for future tech: Exotic "topological" materials are surprisingly common

February 28, 2019
Once thought rare, strangely behaving substances called "topological materials" are in fact quite common, a finding that bodes well for their potential use in future electronics. An international team of researchers has assembled an online catalogue, based on the periodic table, to make it easy to design new versions of these unusual materials. [more]

Realization of a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid in YbAlO3

February 18, 2019
An international research team from Germany, USA, China and Ukraine performed comprehensive spectroscopic and thermodynamic measurements of the new quasi-1D magnet, YbAlO3. Their study shows, that 4f-based magnets can provide an excellent realization of different aspects of quasi-1D quantum physics, such as quantum criticality and a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid state. Science Café in der DDc Tram

January 25, 2019
High pressure orders electrons

December 10, 2018
High-temperature superconductors can transport electrical energy without losses. However, a rigid charge order prevents superconductivity. In an international collaboration, researchers have studied the competing states with high-resolution inelastic X-ray scattering and found that high uniaxial pressure orders the electrons. Their study provides new insights into the function of electronically correlated materials. [more]

Revealing the topological nature of the surface states in SmB6

November 09, 2018
The topological nature of the surface states in SmB6 is exposed by means of scanning tunneling spectroscopy on samples with magnetic substituents or by using magnetic tunneling tips. These local measurements are complemented by global transport measurements on identical samples. [more]

To the citizens of Dresden

October 11, 2018
On 19th Sept. 2018, there was a racially motivated assault on a foreign PhD student in a tram of DVB. In an open letter, the PhD representatives from six Dresden research institutes clearly position themselves against any violence and oppression towards other people on the basis of their origin or culture. Furthermore, they emphasize the importance of an open and diverse society, especially for Dresden as a research location. [more]

A universal strategy to design superior water splitting electrocatalysts with in situ fast surface reconstruction

October 05, 2018
A universal strategy based on electrochemically induced fast reconstruction of amorphous nanofilm precursors is proposed for exploring ultrahigh mass activity and extremely stable bifunctional water splitting catalysts. The facile reconstruction strategy is promising for the development of novel efficient catalysts for other advanced energy conversion and storage devices. [more]

Electrons go with the flow

October 05, 2018
Hydrodynamic electron flow can only be observed in high-purity quantum materials. An international team of members from the IBM Research Laboratory Zurich, the University of Hamburg and the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids has now found signatures of electron hydrodynamics in the semimetal tungsten diphosphide. The results were published in the journal Nature Communications. [more]
