Workshop: Strongly correlated materials - perspectives, challenges and dreams

The spectacular physical properties often observed in materials containing transition metal and rare-earth elements challenge our comprehension of solid state physics. These properties include superconductivity, heavy-fermion behavior, colossal magneto-resistance, metal-insulator and spin-state transitions, and multiferroicity. We aim to understand how the electrons in such materials interact with each other as to generate those unusual quantum phenomena. We also would like to know whether we can purposely design new materials with new properties. Modelling of the electronic structure and properties have to go hand in hand with the exploration of materials with uncharted or even unknown properties. Here is where scientists from the research fields of solid state physics and solid state chemistry have to come together. Bringing together experts from both research communities, this workshop is intended to provide a fertile backdrop to brainstorm on future directions of research on the basis of the latest findings and insights.
