Workshops

The workshops support the scientific work of the institute. The four departments

  • mechanical manufacturing
  • wood workshop
  • electronics workshop
  • glass blowing workshop

meet most scientific requirements.

mechanical manufacturing

1. Customizing equipment to scientific requirements

1. Customizing equipment to scientific requirements

For experimental constructions and equipment scientists initially use commercial devices. These have to be modified for the particular purpose. Such adjustments are made by the workshop (e.g. production of the sample carrier, pressure cells, clamps, adjusting aid and much more).

2. Assembling modules into an experimental structure

The equipment often consists of several devices allowing experiments by interacting with each other. The workshop assembles these experimental structures of many devices. Racks, adaptors, caverns, cranes, metallic and glass pipelines as well as cable connections of all kinds necessary to conduct experiments are built.

3. Development and construction of scientific devices

If devices for an experiment don’t exist, they have to be developed, manufactured and tested in the workshop. Here all legal requirements such as health protection and safety, fire safety are fulfilled and documented in the user manual and the manufacturer’s declaration. Especially for the Laboratory of High Safety Standard (LHS) at the institute many devices have been developed and constructed by the workshop due to the specific requirements. As examples the arc furnace and the sample grinding machine are mentioned here.

4. Repairs

Sometimes equipment breaks down. Thus essential part of our daily work is repairs or improvement of standard equipment.

The workshop is equipped with state-of-the-art tools to meet the high standards of quality, accuracy and special technologies. A wire eroding machine and a vertical eroding machine, a 5-axis simultaneous milling center and many other CNC machines are used. The highly qualified 11 employees extend their knowledge with training and first of all with every new task they have to handle. Often there are no experience, no standards or known technical solutions for a problem. That means the workshop is forced to work experimentally to satisfy novel demands of miniaturization and the application of special material. Close cooperation between scientists and technicians is necessary. We support and advise the scientists in technical fields. The collaboration of science and technology make success tangible. The knowledge acquired over time is shared with the trainees and interns.
