Humboldt Fellow since April 2018

As a Humboldt post-doctoral fellow my research work is directed towards investigations of the Nernst thermoelectric properties of topological materials. In the current decade, topological materials attract significant research interest. These exotic materials provide a new scope in the thermoelectric energy conversion as the topological band structure effect can enhance the thermoelectric response. The basis of the current thermoelectric research is the longitudinal thermoelectric response to a temperature gradient, the Seebeck effect. However, the studies on the Nernst effect, the transverse thermoelectric response produced by a mutually perpendicular magnetic field and temperature gradient is not created much attention. The Nernst effect provides an alternative, and simpler approach to conventional thermoelectrics as there is no need for both n-type or p-type legs and the voltage is scalable by lateral series connection of single kind of material. Prof. Claudia Felser’s group in Dresden work in broad spectra of synthesis, measurement and understanding of the electronic structures. The group also has excellent research tools including experimental instruments and theoretical calculation. Overall, the group’s outstanding research experiences in solid state chemistry and physics motivated me choose her as my host for Humboldt fellowship. The post-doctoral fellowship of Alexander von Humboldt Foundation is one of the most prestigious award, which will be helpful in future career. The foundation supports me to work for long term (24 months) at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids with my own research project.
