PhD Position (m/f/d) in Quantum Material Physics

Job Offer from March 28, 2022

Project description
A PhD position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Seunghyun Khim in the Physics of Quantum Material department at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids (MPI-CPfS) in Dresden, Germany, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Joachim Wosnitza (Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf and Technische Universität Dresden). The project involves the study of the unconventional superconducting state and of the anomalous normal state of the newly discovered heavy-fermion superconductor CeRh2As2 (S. Khim et al., Science 373, 1012 (2021)).

In particular:
⦁    Synthesis of chemically tuned CeRh2As2 single crystals.
⦁    Characterization by use of resistivity, magnetization, heat capacity.
⦁    Participation in high-magnetic-field experiments at the Dresden High Magnetic Field Laboratory (HLD).

The candidate should have
⦁    An excellent Master's or Diploma or equivalent degree in material science, physics, chemistry or a closely related subject.
⦁    Basic background knowledge in solid-state physics including crystallography, magnetism, and superconductivity.
⦁    Practical scientific experience in material synthesis and/or low-temperature experiments.
⦁    Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.

The project will provide
⦁    Practical experimental experience on crystal growth of intermetallic quantum materials and on their basic characterization in terms of resistivity, magnetization and heat-capacity experiments.
⦁    Broad international environment with leading experts in the field of experimental and theoretical condensed-matter physics.

The project is funded by the German Research Foundation.
Intended starting date: July 2022 or later

Please apply via email including a motivation letter, curriculum vitae, and description of your previous work to Applications are considered until the position is filled.
