Elena Hassinger - Max Planck Research Group Leader
The Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids welcomes Dr. Elena Hassinger, who took up post at the beginning of September, to establish the first Max Planck Research Group (http://www.mpg.de/max_planck_research_groups) that we have hosted in the Institute. These independent groups are designed to complement the activities of the existing departments, and are aimed at promoting the research careers of outstanding young scientists.
Elena received her Diploma in Physics in 2007 from the University of Heidelberg, Germany. After her PhD at the CEA Grenoble, France, she spent 4 years as a postdoc at the University of Sherbrooke in Canada, where she was an FQRNT fellow and a CIFAR Global Scholar. Her 2 children were also born in Canada.
Dr. Hassinger’s research activity concentrates on the interplay of magnetism and superconductivity in quantum materials such as uranium based heavy fermion systems, high temperature superconductors and the unconventional superconductor Sr2RuO4. She is an expert in electric and thermal transport measurement in extreme conditions, i.e. very low temperature, high magnetic field, and very high pressure. In the next 5 years at our institute, her group will build up an experiment to perform quasiparticle spectroscopy of quantum materials with the aim of directly detecting their electronic structure. This powerful method will enable a profound understanding of emergent phenomena in quantum materials.
