The Journées des Actinides international conference at MPI CPfS

May 08, 2023

The Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids hosted the 14th School on the Physics and Chemistry of the Actinides and the 52nd Journées des Actinides international conference on April 17 – 21 April 2023.

This event provided an informal and interdisciplinary forum for the discussion of current advances on the physical and chemical properties of lanthanide- and actinide-based alloys and compounds. Nearly 90 participants from 17 countries all over the world have taken part, with 16 lectures, 38 talks, 2 round table discussions, and 30 posters.

Several awards were presented during the conference. The recipients were selected by the jury as well as by the members of the international advisory board. Itzhak Halevy (NRCN, Be’er Sheva, Israel) was honored with the life-time achievement award in light of his extensive contribution to the experimental and theoretical studies in the field of nuclear forensics. In particular, his achievements in understanding of fission track analysis. Another life-time achievement award was presented to Yuri Grin (MPI CPfS, Germany) for his extensive contribution to the experimental and theoretical studies of actinide-based materials. In particular, his achievements in understanding of chemical bonding and intrinsic crystal chemistry. The mid-career research award was given to Krzystof Gofryk (INL, USA), in recognition of his contributions to the experimental studies of actinide-based materials – specifically his achievements in understanding of well-known as well as newly discovered solid-state compounds.

Among young researcher, six participants were recognized for giving excellent talks and presenting exemplary posters:

  • Denise Christovam (MPI CPfS) for her talk “U f2 multiplet states in low energy excitations of UTe2
  • Clara Silva (ESRF, HZDR) for her talk “Fundamentals of the U halides”
  • Laura Agnarelli (MPI CPfS) for her talk “Crystal structure of Be17Ru3A0.25 (A = Ce, Pr, Th, Gd, U, Eu, Y)“
  • Florence Legg (University of Bristol) for her poster “Epitaxial light actinide oxide thin films“
  • Andries van Hattem (Technical University of Delft) for his poster “Chemistry of clad breach in a Lead-cooled fast reactor “
  • Meike Pfeiffer (Technical University of Dresden) for her poster “High pressure study of the unconventional superconductor CeRh2As2

Gertrud Zwicknagl (Technical University of Braunschweig) has been elected to join the international advisory board. We congratulate all those who were honored and awarded with prizes and thank all attendees for their active participation in the 14th School on the Physics and Chemistry of the Actinides and the 52nd Journées des Actinides international conference.
