Dr. Catalina Salazar awarded by the Latin American Center of Physics (CLAF)
The Colombian Catalina Salazar was awarded for her thesis on new ways of cooling with the use of materials to be used for magnetic refrigeration.
One of the main issues in our daily life are the cooling mechanisms and the last decades have been characterized by a huge concern with respect to cleaner and more efficient processes. One method that is attracting increasing attention is the method of magnetic refrigeration. The main idea of this method is the utilization of a solid magnetic material as refrigerant subjected to varying magnetic fields, which would result in a greater energy efficiency and a lower risk to the environment. Catalina Salazar has completed her PhD thesis at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in 2012 and works now in the group of Claudia Felser at the MPI CPfS.
